Clary Anderson NJSIAA Hall of Fame Induction
Mounties:
Recently, the executive committee of the NJ State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) endorsed its selection committee recommendation that Clary Anderson be inducted into the NJSIAA Hall of Fame.
The induction will be at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon Monday, Dec. 7, at The Pines Manor, which is on Rt. 27 in Edison, NJ.
This is the same place in which Gil Gibbs was inducted last year.
As of right now Sue Anderson Giese and her husband, possibly accompanied by a cousin, will be in attendance Dec. 7. It is my hope that there will be a strong turnout of MHS alums. There is a hotel right across the street from The Pines Manor, and some lesser motels on Rt. 27 and nearby on Rt. 1.
You must order tickets through the NJSIAA, which is located in Robbinsville, NJ.
If you have questions on this, please ask. I will try to supply answers.

Montclair High School All Class Reunion, LLC to
Host 3rd Reunion in Nishuane Park
MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Reunion in the Park, the flagship event of the
Montclair High School All Class Reunion (ACR) will be held on
Saturday, July 21, in Montclair's Nishuane Park. Rain date is Sunday,
July 22. It will be the third such event held by the organization
that expands the class reunion concept to include every graduating
class in the history of the township's only public high school.
The reunion, which began in 2009, is one of several events that the
ACR sponsors throughout the year. In February, the ACR hosted a
comedy show at Tierney's Tavern in Montclair. The standing room only
soiree was a first for the group, in which audience members spanned
MHS graduated classes from 1941 to the 2000s.
A portion of the proceeds from the comedy show went towards the 2nd
annual MHS ACR $1,000 Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a
current Montclair High School senior. This year's recipient, senior
class president Gabrielle Louise Peterson, received the award on June
7.
The weekend's festivities begin with a Meet-and-Greet at Egan's & Sons
(Halcyon Lounge), 118 Walnut Street, Montclair, from 6:00 p.m. to
10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20. The main event, the FREE All Class
Reunion on Saturday, July 21, will feature local musicologist, DJ
Buzz, and include class pictures, door prizes, an alumni basketball
game, access to the swimming pool (discounted at $5 per person),
tennis courts, softball field and much more. The ACR activities will
conclude on Sunday, July 21, with a farewell brunch at The Office Bar
& Grill, 629 Bloomfield Avenue. ACR attendees will receive a 20%
brunch discount.
Thousands of MHS graduates, friends and family attended the first
reunion in 2009, with an increased attendance in 2010. ACR
organizers, nine MHS alumni, expect to far exceed previous attendance
numbers based on the early responses and enthusiasm generated across
the country. Although there is no BBQing permitted in Nishuane Park,
there will be vendors with a diverse culinary fare available for
purchase. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair for their comfort
and to observe all posted parking ordinances. There will also be a
photographer who will offer immediately available pictures of the
weekend's events for sale.

The Glory Years
"Close your eyes. Let your mind take you back to a glorious autumn afternoon as you visualize a football game at Woodman Field. Tune your senses to the sights and sounds all around and remember what it was like to be there. The stands are crowded with excited fans and the band can be heard marching into the field to a drumbeat cadence. Hear the cheerleaders as they entreat the crowd of thousands to "stand up and holler" for Montclair. And see the boys in blue and white as they walk onto the field, in good Mountie tradition, eager to take on the opponent in another contest for gridiron glory. The anticipation is high because it's a Montclair High School football game."
That sets the mood for "The Glory Years," a new book by local author Robin Hodgson, which is about Montclair High School football in the Clary Anderson/Butch Fortunato era. The book spans the time from the late 1920's when Clary played for MHS, through the 1983 season when Montclair won its first "official" State Championship (in the State Championship playoff format) and Butch retired from coaching. The years in between are about how Clary and Butch created legendary gridiron success and the athletes who made it happen.
More than two dozen people were interviewed for the book and it gives an "up-close" account of Montclair football as told through the eyes of those who played for MHS over the decades --- their stories in their own words. Do you know why the Mounties have traditionally walked onto the field before a game, instead of running? Do you know the story of Clary's winning "Bloomfield game tie"? Are you one of those hundreds of kids who used to "jump the fence" to get into Woodman Field on a Saturday afternoon? This book is about the people, the games, the traditions and the aura surrounding Montclair football. So get ready to sit back, curl up with this nostalgic book, and re-live your "glory years" at Montclair High School.
